Okay. Time for another crazy question: Why won't my swing axles move up and down when the car is on jackstands and the motor is out?

The axels are resting on the rear tubes and I want to change the rubber boots that are under them. But when I put a jack below them to lift them up the whole care lifts. No axle movement at all on either side.

Reinstall the engine or, place 350lb. in the luggage compartment are in the rear of the car.
Then you can replace your boots.

Yes, the suspension still functions. Both the swing plates and the torsion bars now no longer need to lift against both the VW and the engine weight since you took it out.

You might try a ratchet strap to compress each rear shock a bit. That should give you the bit of room to change the axle boots.

use a chain with your jack.

Great. Thanks for the info. It's been a few decades since I've worked on VWs (old FV racer). So I'm more than a bit rusty - maintenance-wise.

Just remember to:

1. Put the boot seam at the 3 or 9 O'clock position. That seam does not flex well when installed at the 12 O'clock position, and will tear up the boot. Do use a little RTV on the seam faces to seal that much better.

2. Tighten the smaller hose clamp last and just before tightening, push the small end of the boot toward the transaxle about 3/16 to 1/4". That way the boot has a little slack so it does not get too tight and tear when you jack the VW up later.

Will do. Thanks.
