Hello.
I am restoring 55 Barn Panel and 54 DX now.
I am interested in cargo door strap.
My 54 DX has a wrong strap.
I intend to repair it.
(front side)
(rear side)
I look at the photos, Vintage photos in forum.
Most of DX have a strap in rear cargo door.
But, in the parts list, the strap of DX is one.
What do you think?
There is a hole (nut) attaching strap cleat to rear Cargo door.
There is a similar hall on the body side.
55Panel & 54DX has a hole.
By any chance.....
As for the rear door, does the strap attach strap cleat to the Body side?
Do you know it?

Yes, the Parts Manual is confusing here.
It only seems to list the forward/lhs strap, and not the rear/rhs strap.
The forward/lhs starap only has one [90] shackle (cleat), as the other end of the strap is held by a pin [91]
Cleat secured by 2 screws [89]
The rear/rhs strap has two cleats.
4 screws
The screws are M5 raised-head countersunk machine screws
I’ve assumed they are slotted…not philips…they *may* have originally been philips |

Hi, RockStock.
Thank you for your photograph.
Really two clates!
Is the photograph your BarnDX?
Is the strap beige? |

Yes, my deluxe
I’ve had to recreate the strap detail here, so don’t assume it’s all original
Straps were black I believe…but this dye fades to beige
I read that deluxe cleats are slightly taller…so I used taller cleats (16mm when you sit them on a table)
Repop straps are sold with two cleats, btw |

My 55Panel has beige Strap. Is the faded black?
I intend to buy this.

Is it different from OG in various things?
"taller cleats"?
Is it this?

The taller one above is to help clear the deluxe exterior aluminum body trim when the door is fully open. I've pulled three of these off of original 55,56 rusty deluxe buses
Your panel should be black in color |

Yes
I think the taller cleat just helps to clear the aluminium trim around the mat on the inside of the cargo doors - which it has to bridge |

The VW factory should have cut this partial trim.
Then, it was not necessary to prepare Cleat for DX into the VW factory.
My door card does not have the aluminium trim.
......... #-o Shall I repair the door card? To OG design.
Then I must look for the cleat for DX. |

Don’t question 1950s/1960s VW, Yuichiro!😂
Yes, vertical trim is short
Yes, go with original design…
A few people are making very nice reproductions already

This makes a lot of sense to...
And it's all about the original screws for extra points ! Slotted and pointed |

Will appearances be different?
no.8studio is splendid.
WCCI makes Upholstery, too.

But the big baggage is expensive to go half round the earth.
....Near my house, there is an interior shop.
The interior shop made cloth for seat of 52SPLIT.
He checked an original design hard.
Upholstery of my DX intends to restore it in this shop.
What is this? I was thinking about this.
The aluminum trim is this shape.I see, understand. :D

Small details, but WW strap is probably longer (check), and has the seems sewn in different places
But will work ok
Cleats may be the low version
Looks like that strap comes with only one cleat
Trim is your version b
Allows the ribbed mat to slide under

Just to add to this, I coincidentally just came across 2 straps while looking for something else a few days ago. I dont exactly recall what bus they came from unfortunately.
I also have 4 cleats, 3 tall 1 short.
The straps definitely at one time were black, now faded on the outsides. One is longer than the other. judging by the condition, look like they may have come off the same bus. anybodys guess though.
Also because Ive been a real hardware nerd during my bus restoration, got curious on the screws. I looked in the parts book and they are a philips head countersunk M5x10 ( start pickin Chris  ). Same screws used for the optional rear hatch/truck decklid latch mechanism as well as all the screws holding the locking mechanism onto the header bow of the sunroof.
The screws in the photo, both left are new JIS (A secret of mine, found that a lot of JIS hardware is very close if not exact to original german stuff) , rights are original replated.

🙂
Good work on the Philips screws
Would like to see where they are mentioned in the parts book
Thinking the cleat on the rhs here doesn’t need to be the tall version. No trim to clear.
I wonder if it was tall, or short? |

At a quick glance, this ISP kit looks decent to me
Yes, I understand the pin strap is shorter
Screws, I’ll trust MR over ISP 🙂
Would be nice to have some photographic back-up/evidence from an original bus… |

Here's my '55 Deluxe
Front strap (probably original screws and everything:
Rear strap cargo door side:
The body side of the rear cargo door 100% has the wrong screws (No photo)
Screws from the rear cargo door shown directly above:
These are probably from a later Bus as they are the same as my '63 15-Window |

I don't own a barndoor or a deluxe but this is by far the most interesting Bus thread on the Samba the last couple of weeks.
I am so nerding out on this. :P |

| So are these specific to barndoor or did they install them on later years? I found one in my parts stash the other day but don't know if its barndoor specific or if it even matters, if in fact the same ones were produced for multiple years. The lower cargo pillars of my bus are so wasted that I have nothing left of the original. |
