Thought I’d ask before taking the plunge. I’m about to take a long road trip in my 84 Westie. I’ve read here that one should have a spare ECU in the van “just in case”. Following that advice I bought a used one from one of the vendors listed here. So the question is: to test my backup ECU do I just swap it with my current one and then start up the engine? No secret handshakes or unusual start procedures ? Thought it best to ask first than to fry something on start up. |

It is indeed that simple. |

A prudent plan in my opinion, but then I did the same thing (bought a used spare here and confirmed it by moving the plug over to it and going for a ride. |

Thanks for the shared experiences. Popped it in, fired up the van, and drove down the freeway..all was good. |

I'd probably disconnect the battery ground prior to be on the safe side. Will come in handy having a spare. I carry one as well. Cheap insurance. |
