Is the Thing front turn signal lens identical to the Beetle 70-79 ?

| No, the Beetle fender is curved on top where the turn signal mounts, the Thing turn signal is mounted on a flat spot on top of the fender. |

There are two types.
70 to early 73 Small Housing
113 953 041 J Front Right
113 953 041 L Left Yellow
Late 73 to End of production Large Housing
113 953 041 N Front Left
113 953 042 N Front Right
If your car, has "Elephant Foot" type rear ligths it uses the later one. If it has "VW Bus" Type rear lights it uses the early type. Each type uses a specific rubber gasket underneath.
The earlier one is smaller and rounded, the later one is larger and more square
