So my usual smog place ran a test that "he doesn't always run". But I failed the Gross creep or leak or something. He said it was because my charcoal canister is not hooked up on both sides. Although I know that it has never been connected the whole time I have owned this van. So can anyone give me a rundown on getting this connected again? Would you recommend getting a new canister if I do not know the life of the current one?

Canister is likely OK. You will need to check the evap lines to the gas tank. The rubber grommets fail over time. A smoke test will reveal where the leaks are.

Cheers The test should pinch off the vent line that goes to the canister *before* the canister. On my van at least, there's a short amount of rubber hose between lengths of plastic hose to facilitate this. So the condition of the charcoal canister doesn't come into it.

There's a special gas cap that's fitted to the fuel filler, and the system is pressurised to a few PSI, and has to hold that for some minutes to pass the test. There are loads of places where air ("fumes") can leak - so if you haven't refreshed all your tank grommets, including the expansion tanks, for a few years it's time to do it. Refresh kits available from the usual suppliers..

The air cooled setup works differently from the setup for the WBXer engines. What do you have?

On my 1986, the cannister hoses rotted off, up in the right rear wheel well area. Easy tix. Now my smog place does not have the correct gas cap adaptor, so he checks it off as unable to test and I pass with only a visual. I am in the greater San Fransisco Bay Area and thus have the full dyno smog test
Pass with flying colors four weeks ago.

I have a newish california catalyst, and newish O2 sender.

15 mph CO2 15.7%, O2 0.0% , HC 12 ppm, CO 0.01%, NO 1 ppm

25 mph CO2 15.8%, O2 0.0%, HC 7 ppm, CO 0.01%, NO 1 ppm

Cant get much cleaner than that!!!!

Can anyone tell me the type/size of the hoses/lines coming out the bottom of the canister?

Did you have the tank topped off? If there's a leak anywhere in the recovery system (canister, hoses, gas cap), the sniffer will get a whiff of raw gas. My '85 had a canister leak, but it only happened if I filled the gas tank up too far (raw gas smell).
