View original topic: Mud Flaps: Yes or No

So, I am finishing up repairing the inner and outer rear fender/quarter-panels on the 64 Notch. Before I finish this step, I am trying to decide whether it is worth the effort to buy and install the mudflaps. So my two questions.
1. Are mud-flaps pretty much generic, or is there a difference for early versus later models?
2. What is the proper way to attach them?
And maybe a better question, Are they worth installing in the first place?
Thanks in advance?

I have seen people use bug ones with bug brackets. The L shaped ones. But there are type 3 specific ones. They look awesome, but they require you drill into the rear fender and thus adding a spot for rust to start forming. I think they help if you drive off road or on rural roads. I had them on my type 34, but not on my square back.

I've done both originals and cheap bug style with some home made brackets. I would do cheap bug style unless I had a really really really nice car again - those type 3 specific ones are expensive anyways

real ones on my old nice car

bug ones on my old beater

Personally I really like them. As Erik says Type 3 specific are pricey but can really set a car off.

I found the molded ones (not the Bug ones) tend to develop a crack in an area that's hard to reinforce, so I took mine off, fearing losing the flap part. But I thought they looked cool, so I've been shopping for a new pair or time to better repair what I've got.

They do get in the way when adjusting the 3-4 valves, and also when I'm changing the remote oil filter mounted nearby.

My wife's Fastback has the generic bug ones on modified bug brackets. I modified the brackets in such a way that they bolt to the bumper bracket bolts. Yes, they do get in the way when adjusting the valves though. I had thought about adding gravel guards to my 71 Notch, but I never got around to it, and gave them (and the screws) to Dave Pallo for his 72 Square. I sent them to him, as he'd use blue 3M masking tape for road trips.
