View original topic: stock master cyl on Jamar pedal assy? Sandrail conv to 4wh drums

I'm slowly turning a janky kluged sandrail into something less janky and less kludged. (Hey, go with me on that.)
Since Colorado has some sand but more dirt and rocks, I want it to be more "woods rail" than sand rail. Also shooting for eventual street-legal to make logistics easier.
Hence: front brakes are desired.
Current brake setup works but is a horrible kludge. Has a vintage Jamar hyd pedal assy, with a rear-brakes-only master cylinder.
I've got some Bug front drum assemblies.
What I propose to do is, acquire a bug dual-circuit master cylinder, plus a new set of hardlines and hoses, and install all that in place of the Jamar single-circuit MC.
So. Jamar MC bolt pattern is vertical, and it looks like the stock VW master cylinder bolt pattern is horizontal, but I think they're the same bolt spacing.
Can I turn a stock VW dual-circuit MC on its side, so its mounting pattern matches the Jamar base?
Safety is paramount. Just as soon as I scratch off a winning lotto ticket I'll buy all Willwod stuff for this janky old rail, but until then $$$ is a factor, too.
Any other advice about this project? (<-- yeah, I know I'm gonna regret writing that)...

I've been searching for an answer to this for a while as well, I'm surprised (disappointed) nobody has responded yet. I'd rather not change my pedal set and I don't have enough footwell space to relocate my clutch, which I'd have to do if I used the dual cylinder pedal setup.

The Wilwood 260-8794 is a 1" bore, which is allegedly too large for any disc setup you'd find on a rail. Rock hard pedal, from all the other forums I've read.

I've seen some classic Land Rover master cylinders with vertical mounting brackets, but I dunno what the hole spacing is and the smallest bore I've seen is 7/8". Usually the bore size is unlisted, which is frustrating.

This led me to look at Triumph Spitfire GMC226, which has vertical mounts and a 0.7".bore. I just don't know what the hole spacing is, and the fluid reservoir looks like it's for an angled installation.

That led me onto a Morgan page, where they're searching for replacement MCs, and suggested a Subaru Brat master cylinder, MC39170. The Brat cylinder is 0.75", but I still haven't found the hole spacing. It's still the best options I've found so far?

I found a guy with a 39170 and he was willing to measure the spacing, he figures it's 2-3/8. The Jamar pedals spacing is 2-1/4, but it's so close I think filing out the holes would suffice.

The only problem I forsee is the bleeder screws would face toward the driver side and could collide with your clutch master. Some other places say the Datsun 510 MCs are identical, just with the bleeders on the other side - and they're a lot easier to find. I'm currently looking at Raybestos MC39561
