1986 Syncro with 380K km (235k miles).
I found out recently that there is a electrical failure mode for older Vanagons I think everyone should know about and fixs.
Everyone knows about putting relays on the headlights. This is the first thing to do.
The second, is the power to the coil. From mid-86-on the coil was powered directly from the ignition switch/fuse panel. There are some very good threads about this that helped me find the problem. If you search theSamba for D15 and D23 pin you will find some great help.
To prevent the fuse panel/connector blocks from burning/melting, re-route the black wire that provides power to the coil by using a relay.
In the worst case, the electrical connector on the back of the fuse panel melts and the connector-pin cannot be removed from the connector block. This means finding an old connector and re-fitting all the connectors.
So, if you do headlight relays, do the coil relay too.
Good Luck |
