Well that's a loaded question.. Hello all, new to the forum, new to anything air cooled.

I'm restoring an old sand rail that's titled as a 1970, but learned the beam front end is from a mid 60's VW. I ordered aftermarket brake backing plates, inner and outer bearings and seals as a 1964 beetle. Everything fit the old drums but i decided to replace the drums as well, The new drums came in but both in/out bearing "holes" are smaller. Did the parts house just get it wrong? the part# on the box matches the website ad.

I can add pictures if needed.

Thanks, Rick

Welcome.

I remember when I bought mine, it seemed like I got a lesson in VW history. Every answer you seek is here. Get those pics together and everyone will help you out.

Basically check part numbers cast in drums, if they don't match the new drums are wrong.....

Believe there was a change in sizes between 65 and 66...

The new drums do not have anything stamped on them. The pictures show measurements where the bearing race would sit. The new drums had inner races already installed on them

I ordered new bearings and backing plates for a 64 beetle, they fit my old drums perfect.

It's hard to keep track of these things. I have accumulated boxes of parts I thought should work but didn't for whatever reason. For the most part, beetles didn't change all that much to the untrained eye, but if you look closely you'll see the differences. I'm not one of those people who can has room in his brain to remember all that crap so I buy stuff and sometimes I strike out.
Another problem is websites using stock photos for everything. You look at something and say that's what I need! But they use that pic for every year regardless of design changes and you either need to be a VW historian or get lucky and the fine print at the bottom of the page tells the tale.

I imagine another source of frustration is buying a rail that someone else put together and trying to figure out where all the pieces came from. I pity the foo who ends up with my woods buggy for that reason.

Long story short, looks like you need to send those back. Maybe they can work with you to get you what you need and just do an exchange. I'm sure this hasn't been the first time if there was a design change middle of that year.

Well I cross referenced the original stamping and got a hit on CIP1.com, not convinced I called their tech support and within a minute after asking a few questions he was able to determine my front end, a pre August 1964 beam. Hubs are installed and fit perfectly.

Thanks Rick
