View original topic: Sealing cable exit boot

The replacement cable exit boot comes with 3 holes - for clutch, accelerator and choke cables. Since the later cars don't use manual choke cables, this leaves an open hole in the boot. Since the early 60s cars don't have a bowden tube for the accelerator cable, there is another opening in the boot - as can be seen in this photo:

Anyone have ideas on how to seal these? The early pans don't seem to have drain holes, so I want to be extra careful about sealing any openings.

Also, after rebuilding the front beam, I realized that the top of the king pins seem designed to catch water and debris and promote corrosion. Anyone tried to seal these? I thought of trying a VW door plug, but the one I tried was a bit small. May stay with some silicone though.

Thx,
Byas

The one linked below, the second of two boots appears to not have the holes you dont need, but I dont know that for sure, photo is blurry

Otherwise an urethane roofing caulk I have found to be be tough and sticks well to rubber, much better than silicone rtv. Both Loctite and DAP make this product, available in several colors including black, non corrosive too, unlike some silicones which give off acidic acid upon cure. The black is oft sold as a roofing caulk in a caulking gun tube

If you be driving thru deep water, drain holes can be made BUT... drain holes also can let water in, even via splash, so install a rubber drain tube that will act as a one way flow device.
paint the inside of the tunnel, and coat with a waxy rust preventative if you anticipate high water crossings. If salt water is encountered, well best to avoid, or next best is immediate fresh water rinsing.
also if fresh water ingress, you may help dry out tunnel by removing the under rear seat shift linkage access cover, and even blow air into it via a shop vac or leaf blower to speed drying.

For the king pin area , Mine have been open to the elements for over 60 hears, no problem, just coat with grease to avoid corrosion.
