View original topic: Clunking noise from rear end

Help, please.

I have a '73 Thing. I am hearing a regular clunking sound from the rear end only when under power (i.e., no sound if coasting, but always if accelerating or just on the gas at constant speed in 2nd, 3rd and 4th). Recently, rear tires started showing wear on insides. Clunking came well before tire wear so could be totally unrelated. To narrow things down, within the last 5000 miles: axles are new, transmission rebuilt, new shocks, new motor. Bushings for IRS trailing arm and torsion bars never been changed. Sound is bad enough, I don't drive the car much now.

Could be that one of the CV joints was assembled wrong. Is it like a popping sound? I assembled a cv joint wrong, and that was the result.

I had the same issue years ago. Does the clunking noise happen even when just coasting (not accelerating) over bumps? If so, it's the body mounts. https://socalautoparts.com/product/rubber-17mm-bod...xHEALw_wcB

Doesn't happen when coasting, but easy enough to check the mounts. Sounds like CV joints deserve a look as well. Thanks.
