I bought a new set of plus 1 inch trailing arms from Chirco ($400 in stock) along with the caliper mounts. The caliper mounts are weld on. I mounted the caliper to one and then held it on the trailing arm to locate the weld spot. The hub with disc was installed for proper positioning. Some chalk marks and it's ready to weld except I see a potential issue.
The disc isn't all of the way into the caliper. The brake pads only contact about 30% of the disc. The caliper mounts are to long so the caliper is to far way from the disc.
The solution was easy. I cut a half inch off of the bottoms of the weld on mounts and then welded it on. Perfect fit. Most of the brake pads are now contacting the disc with no interference.
I figure it's standard to do make the caliper mount to long because there are many different trailing arms. They make it to long so you can trim to size. Makes sense to me.
My issue is that if I had not noticed it, I would have just welded it up and drove on....with rear brakes that were only grabbing with 30% of the brake pad. Anybody else notice that? |
