My 1960 T5 coupe, body no. 110471, was originally painted state gray, and I want to repaint it the same color. I always thought this paint code was no. 6201, but the local (small town) auto paint supply store (the only one for miles around, so I can't afford to get them too P.O.'d at me!) says that number "doesn't come up in our system". This seems distinctly lame to me because I think Porsche has been using this exact color for the last 60 years or more, so I don't understand why this auto paint store is having such a hard time identifying it, but would anyone know of another, perhaps more recent, number for the slate gray paint that Porsche was using in 1960 that this paint store might recognize? Thanks, everyone.

In my list for T5 models, slate gray has the Porsche code 6001 and Reutter code 741. For T6 models slate gray has code 6201 but still the same Reutter code 741. The C-models in slate gray had 6401, but Reutter code unknown. Hope that helps.

i found this site really useful (i was hunting autarium green)

same issue, the ingredients to the original porsche codes just don't exist (legally) any more, so technically you just cannot get the original code mixed

this site shows the alternative codes

for me autarium was originally a single stage gloss, you just cannot get it as single stage anymore (for the reasons above) so you need to get 2 stage base, then add clear

so for me the original porsche code was 5712, i had to get 6AU

Thanks for all the advice! I am inclined to just use PPG Omni urethane single-stage, even though they can't mix it from any recipe for old Porsche slate gray, because I think it's a high-quality paint and that's what the local paint shop sells. Not only would single-stage be more authentic for my car, but I have found it to be more durable than base/clear, even though the base/clear may be shinier. I think I am just going to choose a shade of gray that I like from PPG Omni paint chips and maybe have a little metallic added to it. I like that look. Nothing too crazy, though.

Unfortunately it has come to my attention that I didn't know what I was talking about in my previous post, so please ignore it. I guess if I were to use a single state PPG product it would be their Concept "DCC". A local body shop that I respect likes to use Sikkens paint. It is not too easy to figure this paint stuff out.

Go to the Glasurit web site. They have a Reihergrau and Schiefergrau listed.

Schiefergrau translates to slate grey.

Thank you very much, Roland. I will try to do that.

I did obtain the PPG formulation for "POR6201", "schiefergrau" or slate gray, in a single-stage urethane:

But so far I haven't been able to find a paint shop that will mix it for me from this recipe. They instead want to do a color match from an existing sample. I would like to get them to mix it from the recipe, and I don't have a color sample. Also, I think maybe the PPG paint would be water-based. I would like to have your opinions on these issues, please.

Per BASF website:

Industrial Finishes & Systems Inc
3590 Sunrise Blvd
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742-7323
+1 (916) 635-8831

is a dealer.

I painted a 72 Ghia BlutOrange in my garage, and had a proffecional painter say it turned out better then most of his, because it was Glasurit.

I guess the paint I will be using is PPG "DCC Concept" single-stage urethane. It is being discontinued, and at first my WESCO paint supplier in Sonora, CA (a 2-1/2 hour drive from here; can't buy it in this county) didn't have enough of some of the toners and was at first reluctant to order more. In the meantime I did call Industrial Finishes and Systems, Inc., as recommended by Roland above. They were very courteous and helpful and said they could mix the color for me, but my painter strongly recommended the DCC Concept over the brand sold by Industrial Finishes. Then God intervened; the WESCO dealer in Sonora somehow got the 356 religion; and he ordered the necessary toners. I should get the paint next week.

I have been a professional painter for 30 years now and Vw/porsche enthusiast. I also have a slate grey 356. Knowing how important it is to really get these colors right, I would recommend using an original sample for reference. A lot of times old formulas being translated in modern paint really misses the mark.
