I am looking at and thinking of buying a 2014 Jetta TDI. I already know that the fuel economy will not be as good as our old ALH cars. Is there anything else to be aware of?
Thanks in advance! |

| DPF failure... |

| DPF failure is 100% going to happen - they crack. But, it's doable on jack stands for around $1200. I don't want to do it again anytime soon, but it was easier than I expected. The DPF and a glow plug relay are the only issues we have had with our CJAA. |

my DPF (warranty replacement) is coming up on 100k miles and has always been run with a malone stage 2 tune ($700). it's about 60% full of ash. firm believer that ditching the "fix" tune prolongs the DPF life. my tune eventually wore out the clutch ($2000) and i also had to do a thermostat ($1200) & timing belt @ 130k ($1000) sunroof drains all needed cleaning/resealing ($0). lost a glow plug ($100) and a fuel pressure sensor ($15) along the way as well.
HUGE learning curve on the CR cars. don't expect it to be anything like an ALH. VCDS is a must have. |

| pondered on this for a bit and i just wanted to let you know that i think a PD (MK5) TDI would be much better suited to your needs. |

Well, I bought it. It does have some issues but every used car does. Not sure what a DPF is but it sounds like I will find out. This car has been deleted, has a straight pipe and Malone stage II tune. Huge power compared to our ALH engines. Just did a trip and it looks like the fuel economy is going to be very close to our ‘04 Jettas.
The previous owner put in LED headlights and there is no brights. Nothing changes, it’s on dim in both positions. Any ideas?
DPF diesel particulate filter. With the straight pipe exhaust I believe that animal is now extinct. Correct me if I am wrong. |

No sir, you got lucky with your purchase. No more dpf for you.
Cool that it was already deleted. |

6 speed standard shift. I might be pushing 70 but I’m still not too old to work the peddles! Automatic transmissions are best reserved for the disabled in my view!
Okay now that I have offended 95% of north Americans I will go away…
I will admit though that the shift pattern on this car is tight and I do often miss 1st and hit 3rd starting out at the lights. Not sure if it’s just me as my wife it seems does not have as much trouble with that. But then she is only 64….
The only records is what carfax tells us and there is not much detail. |
