there have been several discussions on this topic over the years, unfortunately I don't remember the original poster.
I only have 1952-55/56 doors here so there may be hardly any difference, but I wouldn't be surprised if the shape of , like your 64, is slightly different at the b pillar.

sgellis wrote: djfordmanjack wrote: afaik the beltline shape/cross section is different on older vs newer buses. at least at the front doors and at the b pillar.

I have not notice a difference but have not really checked and may be missing something. Newer doors are often used on BD so I can not see where they could be different. Very interested if there is more to this.

Good point günter, i checked it and yes, the later nos pilar i have and the barndoor klassic fab part nit matches the original sill very well:

So i must rework that area also.

As you guys said i made a template which is in the middle of all the parts i have.
I do the fine adjustment on the car later.

Continue the work!

-Finished the first outer cargo doors skin. And reshape it to match the nos door.
-Weld a Template for the passenger A pilar, take measurements on the left and transfer it to right, recheck everything with the measurements from sgellis!
Put the pilar and front valance in place to get a idea for the few next big steps, but need to think a lot about that before...
- take the second cargo doors skin apart, terrible bent here also...

No big news, but stll a ton of little work the last few days.

Some finishing on the outer door skins, still a bit of bending in some areas, need to think about how straight i want to go...

The inner frame is a different story, mostly gone i ordered some material to make some new small tools for my bending machine, when this material is machined, drilled and adjusted i am able to bent that tiny shape, maybe

I also bought some tools for my Ww2 Matra Lathe to make tools for my beading machine and build some test panels, and learned a lot!!

Also the left inner door frame needs some replacement i had done.

A lot of time gone to thinking about make the Barndoor straight again, so I bought some tools, and built some.
This is one if my most afraid milestone.
The timeline says that next Saturday it's a important day when i start to pull on the corners all around and the roof to look what we can save, wish me luck...

Those door-skins look very good. Are you gonna treat the rust on the inside before you put the inner-structure back on the skins?

Good idea, i will think about that!

Today i fabricated a new panel above the package tray and disassembled the middle roof bow, some bad bending there.

Not much news, i'm still in building some new tools for my bending and beading machine so i am able to build more panels

Today i done a lot of pulling with the celette, get the most of the big damage out of the car, but still a ton of adjustment work!

This celette bench is a game changer for me, with this i can easily pull the pilars where it should be!

Today I started the next step i was very afraid of, and never done a thing that huge....

It's not possible for me to do a good repair on that heavy damaged side wall so i put them completely out today and drilled all the inner structure off and also the remains of that bent C-pilar.

Dont looks good now

I forget that door gap picture from yesterday after the re shaping of the car.
(Dont looks at that dogleg gap, its loose and hanging down)

Hard to find spotwelds in the tight rear corner:

that miserable reinforcement channel just above the wheel opening ! whoever designed that and they completely omitted it short time later.

Yes, that huge hole makes me crazy, some voices in my head wispering: salesflap!

That VW Dienst sign is not new, i bought it from Valentin years ago!

Some work from this evening:

I going from one problem to the next...

-Christian

Anyone else see that the inner rocker is different as the later ones?
The rear latch is folded inside and not to the outer side of the car!

Continued the disassembly:

What a sad, huge hole

Start to reshape the sidewall:

Isn't that the perfect arrangement to replace the rear parcel tray. I think you did this on purpose !

To get this view, like in a 1950s VW cutaway model... is simply breathtaking. It is so beautiful !

Huetti_1989 Tue Jan 21, 2025 3:06 pm

Yes, i want to install the parcel tray this way! Good eye man!

Today i made a template from the left firewall (d pillar) and started to reshape the right side one, badly bent and rusted i need to repair one part after the another.

I still sitting next to the car and thinking about the next steps!
Hart to not put it all apart and take care of all that little details...

Hello Christian,

Always tricky to repair something when everything around it is gone. But you'll manage. It's a strange feeling when such large parts are missing from the vehicle. When my roof and the front end were gone, I also wondered about it

Good work

just needs a RHD side panel now (without doors) vintage would be perfect. Lots of headscratching at the next VW bus meeting :)

seriously, though, lots of work. you are a brave man.

Haha, that would be a very funny thing!!
I heard about a vanagon panel that was built like that, full panel, if I recognize right it was a 16" syncro fallout van.

Yes, a lot of work needed, so today I started the repair on the rear pillar.

I get a bbt raingutter, sadly it's to short and wrong angle...

Thanks Christian, then we can help each other.
The rain gutter thing bothered me too. It's such a simple part and a shame that it doesn't fit. Fortunately my bus remains with a lot of patina where it's not so noticeable. It seems that the upper sheet metal of the rain gutter is not already welded. This makes it impossible to weld it to the top of the side panel and has to be laboriously separated again beforehand. If it was separated, at least the criticism has been received

Yes, you are right!
The roof make some headache to me...

At all i feel a litte overwhelmed in the moment, taping from one big Problem to the next at this project, need to come back to make one corner after the another and not looking to much at problems...

So not much news, finished the D pilar and cut out the rainrail....
And then i start to fit the front valance to year correct, anyone know whats the difference between later and Barndoor ones?
-Holes for the bumper mounts
-flat surface where the splash pan meets the valance?

Anything else i need to do here?

-Christian
