I will second above thought, and ask if you know any history about the bus ? most probably Austrian delivered?

it seems, that it had a crash and the area where you scraped the paint appears to have torch heat spots from straightening.
Are you thinking about another patina restoration, or rather some functional repaint? Are you going to split the chassis from the shell ?
So many questions, that we will hopefully be updated here in the future.

Yes, finally i started one of the Barndoor builds!
I now ordered the birth certificate, i post it here once it arrives!
I not want to do a full restoration again, but we will see how it worked out.

I put out front axle and gearbox, found nuts, nuts and nuts. And some bones of a nut eating animal? :shock:

Thank you very much for starting your build on here, Christian. Was about time to get some life back into the barndoor forum! your detailed builds and pics are always a pleasure to check out and a huge motivation on my own projects !
I am currently rebuilding my shop and may be able to get back to my bus projects next year. :D

I now bought a Celette bench what i dreamed long time. Now i can do exact measurements and bodywork when i am finish with learning how to use it!

I put the bus on it an disassembled front axle and gearbox.

this is the one for the hard jobs :D

some process from the last few days:

built some holders to put it on the celette, front right frame horn is 4mm to low.
amazing how exact you can measure on that jig!
i take care to place it perfectly in the mittle and straight, left and right pillars are the same lenght!

also the left rear corner is a little bent, but not bad at all.

lots of work waiting for you. The Celette is awesome. A friend of mine had 3 until his passing.
Honestly the main chassis rails on the 52 look really good and solid, the front frame horns look mint.
I wonder since you said the front part is low. I believe your early 52 is one of the last buses, that does NOT have the INNER frame braces (double layer) over and just in front of the front axle. I cannot make out any spot welds.
Those earlier buses are notorious to have broken, sagged or bent front frame rails.

This link is the 52 bus that Michael (Cal/USA) bought from Jakob (A). April 52 and it also didn't have the inner braces yet.

If that was the only issue then yours is much better built than mine was :)

My 54 was 4mm short on the right and rear beam ends are clocked 4°. left rear Inner frame was bent before beam was welded in at factory. Even the body was assembled with major misalignments.

It was frustrating taking my initial measurements as I could not get them to match left to right. Once I started disassembling the body I found the misaligned joints and other manufacturing faults.

if you look closely at the original production photos, you will see that the whole side panel units were built from a-post to rear quarters and those were then set on the preassembled and spot welded floor structure. One can easily imagine, if something was a little off in the jigs, that they had to make do and therefore twist or otherwise adjust the frame ends/outriggers to match the other large preassembled sections. Lots of crooked joints for sure. I guess it got a lot better with the new purpose built Hannover bus plant in 1956.

Wow, i never realized that this cars are so much off the measurements!

A friend from me (old vw bodyworker) tells me everything <5mm is usually at splitbus. But that axle points mut be perfect.

I Download all the measurements from you sgellis have something to start!

You drawing the rear axle outer part straight, mine looke bent, but both sides the same, is that roght ir wrong? I think i can not correct that part easily....

I not want to overfill this forum with details, i working anywhere 6 days a week for anywhere at least 6 hours each at this and see a lot of crazy things :D

Finally full sitting on the jig, +/- 1mm from rear to front.

Next sidce project: the zylinder from the jig is damaged...:

Christian, concerning the bend on the spring plate bump stops. We already had several discussions about that in different build topics. I guess I also addressed it in my own build thread.
My take is they would have been straight up from factory and got bent over by overloading and bumping the spring plates (Schwerter) and/or binding lever Shocks (Hebelstoßdämpfer).
The driver's side one on my chassis was extremely bent and easily could be bent back, without heat, and no cracks happening. To me it seems it is a very ductile forged and weldable steel. ( Vergüteter Schmiedestahl) or maybe cast steel, not cast iron. (Temper Guss oder Guss Stahl, kein normaler Grauguss).
Sorry guys I am just translating to German expressions, for it may be easier to communicate in our mother tongue on technical material specs like that.

We in the US never saw Green Knipex pliers.
I've come to love using them in electrical and plumbing work, but agree they are the best performing of any brand pliers.
Love to see your progress. It is always good to see other person's technique at solving problems.

Ok Günther, so they are bent....

So i going to bent the back when i have enough beer once a day :o

The green knipex is only a reca (another tool company) brand produced by knipex. At least one of every size is needed :wink:

Amazing how many barndoor drawing sgellis put online, i print them all for reference measurements!

Some of the parts that should going in that barndoor soon:

Started with the Bodywork today, cuted out the engine lid softly at the hinge, everything very rusty...

Thinked about use another lid, but unfortunately it's a later oen and also rusty, so i start to build a panel on the english wheel
