Hey all,
I tried searching for a similar issue, not sure if I'm using wrong search terms or what....
I've got an issue where after the engine in my thing seems to have warmed up (after 10 minutes of driving) if I let up off the accelerator, the engine dies, and I cannot get it to start again unless I've let it sit for several hours (presumably to cool down).
It used to run rough and hadn't had required maintenance in a while (Other than oil change. not my fault, She's new to me), So, I've done the following up til now (Runs great except for this issue):
-Changed the oil
-Changed the air filter oil
-Changed the Plugs and wires
-Changed the fuel pump (was leaking, new one puts out 4-4.5 PSI)
-New Ignition Coil
-Replaced Distributor Points, Condenser, Cap, and Rotor (Made sure gap is correct)
-Timed the engine
-Installed Oil Temp/Pressure senders (Because I'm paranoid)
-Only using Ethanol Free gas
Any thoughts of what I should test/check next? I'm handy/mechanically inclined, but I'm no professional mechanic, so not sure what it could be.
Thanks all for your sage insight!

Assuming you have a stock carburetor, confirm that the idle cutoff solenoid is working as it should.
If that does nothing for you, look for vacuum leaks.
4.5 PSI fuel pressure is kind of a lot; 2.5- 3 PSI would be better, provided the additional fuel pump gaskets used to lower the fuel pressure don't reduce the pump's output volume too much.
Just my 2¢, good luck |

When you go to restart your engine are you holding down the accelerator pedal while you try to start it? |

I’ve tried both without and with. The only way I’ve found to the engine to restart is after a few hours of waiting. |

What temperature is the oil gauge showing? A hot car will not start. |

I wanna say it was around 180. I honestly don’t remember, all I know is it wasn’t overheating(at least the temp sensor didn’t seem to think so) and I believe it because the oil dipstick wasn’t too hot to pull and check. |

Two things I see mentioned are a hot coil and vapor lock.
You might list how you gapped your plugs and points and how you set the timing.
When you start the engine can you let off the accelerator and will the engine idle? |

Prior to Timing, I thing I was getting vapor lock (It was also running a metal Fuel filter, so I'm sure that also contributed.)
This is the method I used to time the engine to TDC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeNN-LzJh2I
Although, as I am now reading the German military manual for it, I do see ti says timing should be 7.5 Degrees N.O.T. (does that mean BTDC?)
Points: .016
Plugs:.028
When cold/after sitting, the Engine will start right up and idle on it's own just fine.
I appreciate your insights! |

What distributor do you have? |

It’s a vacuum advance |

Is it single or dual canister? Is it Bosch? I doubt it's the problem but I want to make sure you have it timed correctly. |

That is a question to which I’m not very knowledgeable. Hopefully this picture might answer? If not how would I go about determining?

You have an SVDA. It is usually timed at 7.5 or at max advance (28 to 32) with the hoses off. |

Ok, I’ll give that a shot. That would be a reason why the engine would die when letting off the accelerator and not being able to restart hot? |

The distributor most likely isn't the issue. 7.5 degrees is to the right when facing the engine from the rear. You most likely did it like that. |

Did you check the gas tank and tank vent system?
Something could be floating around in the tank and when driving for 10 min it blocks the fuel flow.
If the gas tank is not vented correctly then it will create suction on the fuel and not flow. If you remove the gas cap and hear a swoosh sound there is not a good vent.
An easy way to check for both of these possible problems is when it happens next pull the fuel line off that goes INTO the fuel pump-it should flow fuel via gravity-if it does not it is a fuel problem upstream. |

Is your choke butterfly all the way open after 3-5 minutes of running from a cold start? |

"Maximum advance" means revved to the point the timing doesn't advance anymore, typically around 3000-3500 rpms. You don't need a tach, just rev it until the mark doesn't move as you rev higher. |

That is an important distinction. I've come across people that think 2500 RPM is good enough. It isn't unless you really know your distributor. Even then your should check because a spring or something else could come loose. You need to either rev/max it up to the maximum you will ever put on your engine or to 3500. |
