Early Oval October 1953, the first new car my parents bought.
I have always noticed that when you push the clutch pedal all the way in, the brake pedal also moves forward a little bit.
The play of the brake pedal pushrod is set to 1-2 mm.
I have replaced the bushings, but the problem remains.
I wonder if this is the case or if there is a solution?

Maybe it is the shaft locator at the far end. Is it elliptical or round? Maybe it is a lack of lubrication. Has it been greased anytime recently?

Those are the only 2 things I think could cause the pedals to telegraph.

In all honesty, I have never taken note of that happening, so now, I am left wondering if it has and if I did not pick up on it. I can tell you better in June 2025, when I finally get the 54s pan finished! I will take it out and see what the pedals do!

I am sure someone else will chime in!

Please be aware of an issue with the design of the Split / Oval pedal assembly’s due to the 3 bushing design where a small percentage of sets of pedals have a condition where when the clutch pedal and brake pedal are depressed at the same time ( as when coming to a stop) the brake pedal will stay depressed until the clutch pedal is released,
This can occur both before and/or after the pedals have been restored,
This is not considered a safety issue and pedals restored by Pedal Werks will make every effort to eliminate this but pedals are not warrantied or guaranteed not to have this issue, and this is not a refundable condition or another set of pedals will not be sent unless paid in full for another restoration.
Pedal Werks has been aware of this issue for many years and is working to find a solution

Thank you both.
The clutch pedal shaft is still nicely round without grooves at the end.
The bracket is not worn out but there may be too much play.
I will order a new bracket to see if that makes a difference.

I installed a new clutch pedal bracket 111 721 329 and that solved the problem.
The brake pedal no longer moves when pushing down the clutch pedal.
The play at the brake pedal pushrod remains 1-2 mm.

I discovered this same issue on my November ‘55 oval. I had tried multiple ideas back and forth with ideas from Scott (a very kind and helpful guy! I didn’t even buy parts from him). I almost lost my sanity after every attempt! Things I tried: I rebuilt my OG assembly with new bushings and the Classic Bug Parts hook/shaft conversion kit. I tried the complete kit from Kaddieshack next that converts the outer end and floor bracket (clutch pedal small end turned down on lathe and uses bearing).

Also tried different manufacturers of new stop plates for brake pedal. One of them put excess drag when braking. Tried 3 different return springs. Had to beat the floor to make it as straight and flat as possible. Tore it apart and tried another set of brass bushings. Lost track of how many times I had the damn assembly in and out! Even had to open tunnel and reweld some broken tube supports, since it added to my insanity!!

After all that, the car is on the road and after breaking everything in, still has the “slightest” amount of wanting to hangout with the brake when pushed, but nothing like it first was and NOT noticeable when even operating fast. It seemed to break in and loosen just enough over time. Maybe it would have all along and I was chasing a non existent issue? Who knows.
