Hey all,
Random weekend chat here about body work. I've had tons and tons of cars and I've done extensive body work and welding over the years, but Im certainly no pro!
I have a couple medium dents in my Squareback door, the interior panels are off so its easy to simply put my foot and hand in it and pop it back out, but it doesn't hold up and pops back in. Im assuming with a couple dents, and maybe it was hit it warped the door a bit or changed its original frame shape (doesnt looks that way...) and isn't holding the metal back in its original form? Not sure? I've not come across this before.
With that being said, aside from a new door skin, which I wont be doing on this patina build does anyone know any tricks or things to try?
:?:  |

I would think you'll have to use some heat on the 'oilcan' door skin to fix it permanently. |

Mike is correct. the panel is Oil Canning. Heat can be applied in a few different ways.
Shrinking Disc
Welding torch
heat torch of any kind really
The less invasive way might start with a heat shrinking disk on the inside of the door. but keep in mind Heat will warp any paint if it is too hot. That being said you now know the risk in shrinking metal. Using cold water or a cold wet rag to help in cooling the outside will help but the possibility that you still will have to refinish the door after.
here is a how to video.

I have had good luck using a hair dryer or heat gun then use ice in a wet rag or snow ball even. |
