Wildthings Fri Nov 22, 2024 9:52 am

My 83 1/2 suddenly started giving erroneous temperature reading, with the needle on the gauge barely moving off the peg at any time. A day later the light started coming on and blinking full time. Both the actually coolant temperature and the coolant level are fine. The engine is a 2.1 with a complete 2.1 cooling system and exhaust. I have removed and replaced the plug for the temperature sender several times with no change.

Thoughts?

This same thing just happened to me and it was a bad Thermostat. I didn’t believe it until my radiator tank blew open.

Check it out, after the thermostat replacement all is well.

Cue Crazyvanman for the test procedure, but in the meantime.
Needle is not pegged right, just have the blinking LED?
Seems like a Blue Foil issue.
Are you able to run the engine and measure coolant temp independently with an Infrared Thermometer?
Just to rule out a thermostat issue for your previous needle low reading( doesn’t seem likely at all, but good to know for sure.)

Pull the wire off the sender and measure the voltage between the signal wire and chassis ground.
Should be 10 volts or very close.

This 10 volts comes from the temp gauge, supplied to the gauge by the cluster gauge voltage regulator.
If the regulated gauge voltage reaching the gauge is too low the gauge led can blink endlessly.
