View original topic: question regarding starter wiring

Hi there everyone,

I am hoping to get the start/charge connections made and I've forgotten the wiring between the starter and gen. I've got the two connections made from the front of car to the regulator and I've got the run from the regulator to the starter connected at the reg but I'm confused about two connections. First, the start wire female spade: there are two male spades on the starter relay. Does it matter which one the start wire connects to? Second is the wire from pos on regulator to starter relay: should that be on the same post as the positive battery terminal or on the other post active only during start?

Thanks for your time!

The wire in the second picture goes to the top solenoid terminal with the 13 mm nut.

Thanks for the help!

So same as positive battery cable, sending power to the regulator all the time?

Also, do you happen to know if it matters which of the two spades I connect the start trigger wire to? The old starter only had one spade if I remember correctly.

Yes.

Fine where your photo shows it now.

Actually, it's sending the power the generator created from the regulator to the battery.

I assume you mean the two male connectors on the solenoid. It makes no difference.

Well, hello there :)

I'm working on ending my reign of the title of longest disassembled driver(in my zipcode).

Hope you're doing well, it's great to see you still having fun.

Don't be so sure about that. Solenoid can have 2 male spade terminals that are electrically identidal (VW #50); like here:

But the solenoid in the picture posted by schwim has its 2 male spade terminals far apart, probably not electrically the same. At least one of them is the VW #50 connection from Start position of ignition switch. The other could very well be VW #15a, which connects to positive terminal of ignition coil. I call it a "quick start hot wire" because of the effect it has had upon starting my engine since recently installing a starter solenoid that has this extra terminal. I love it, and posted about it here:
