Hello VW folks!!
Welcome to the the 2025 El Camino Real de Los Tejas VW Road Trip information thread !!!
If you went on the 2024 Route 67 VW Road Trip, or if you heard about it and were unable to make it, well here's your chance!
We are going to travel as much of the famous El Camino Real de los Tejas across Texas, March 17-20, 2025.
We will begin in Laredo, Texas with the Night Before the Road Trip Gathering, before we embark on our journey on Monday, March 17.
The plan is to take the roads less travelled as much as we can before we end up in San Augustin, Texas on Thursday, March 20.
Lot of details to come, so check this thread and a soon to be launched FB page,
Hope everyone can make it for the 'treffen-esque" VW Road Trip!
Thank you,
Gary |

El Camino Real Kings Highway is the translation. We have that road here in the San Jose Calif area too It is a main street thru Silicon Valley. It is extremely long. It is a very very old highway dating back to the Spanish Mission days 100's of years ago. It connected the missions that were up and down california. The highway was lined with bells within hearing distance of each other, these were used as a communication device back then. When i was a kid there were bells erected on poles along much of this road in honor of this old communication method, but today most of them have disappeared. History lost.
I live near another Spanish named road, Alameda de las Pulgas. The translation is not as nice. Avenue of the Fleas, it too is a major road in my parts, stretching through many cities on the San Francisco peninsula.
The Spanish have a sense of humor |

Fun fact regarding the California El Camino Real.
The missions were spaced apart by one days horse ride distance.
Once it was determined that a new mission was to be built. The father would set off and ride a day (approx. 30mi.) to the new mission site. |

Very cool fact, I didn't know that. On our family road trips my wife makes sure we stop at a mission we haven't visited; we have been to 10 so far.
We live probably 2 miles from the San Fernando Mission, had my father's services in their beautiful church that was built in 1797. |

I remember a park ranger saying the same thing about the missions in San Antonio, Texas. It would make sense if they did, it was the same people. Also "Real" means "Royal". |
