I got a car from a friend last year. It hasn't run in 16 years but the engine was fine when it was parked. The engine has multiple large oil leaks so I pulled it from the car and plan to go through it before I start it.
My plan has been to put a vw air-cooled engine in and drive it while I am fiddling with the 3.0sc engine.
Does anyone have any advice on where I could pick up a decent engine without spending too much. Used is fine. I will probably need everything that would come with a turnkey engine. I have done some searching and found a lot of new or rebuilt stuff but I don't know whose engines I should consider and if there are places to stay away from.
I assume this has been done before many times and I will keep searching for information and threads on the subject but I would appreciate any information or advice people are willing to give me.

I'd put a VW Type 4 engine as used in the VW/Porsche 914. More strength and power than a T1 (unless you put big $ into T1). A 2L version worked well in the 1 year transitional 1976 912E. |

I have been reading everything I can find about both engines. I like the aftermarket and modularity of the type1 but the size of a type4. Ive built engines and worked on a lot but mostly gen1 chevys. I don't have any experience with VW except the alh.
Id love to try to microsquirt and turbo what ever I end up with.
I'm definitely interested in the engine kits that I've seen. My biggest concern with them is that I don't know enough to know what I don't know. Ya know.
I haven't found a built your own type4 kit yet but I'm still looking.

Im still lost on what to do for an engine. I am going to post in the engine section for some advice
I pulled the engine and it will take some time to go through it and set it up the way I would like to.

would be a total waste of time to try to rig up another engine in your sc. AND oil leaks can be cured without dropping the original engine |
