So i was searching for a specific Subaru subject and realized that Theres 112 topics on Subaru in this forum which led me to search other non vw manufacturers, and there were 16 on V8, 13 on Honda, half a dozen on fords, couple on Chevy, 18 on corvair, and im sure the list can go on but i think you get the idea. so how about next time someone posts something on a cool engine thats not a vw some of you keep your whining to yourself? And maybe consider that theres at least a couple hundred other non VW engine related TOPICS in this forum. And if mine requires being moved then maybe the mod should have to move ALL of those topics too? Fair is fair
i just wanted to point this out because of the crybaby’s thatd rather get a post moved, and have the forum sit stagnant just because they dont like the subject ( or the poster ), than to have something different to see & talk about |

I would say....and this is a topic all of its own probably....that with the zillions of VW's produced, it probably rates #1 as the "chassis" that has more different types and makes of engines installed than any other chassis.

Well here are a couple of pictures of my other "love" project just to sully the mix.
The engine is a "reverse" VW before Subaru got into the act.
Front wheel drive, flat four with inline transmission, water boxer.
What is it you say?
An 1800cc Lancia Flavia Coupe engine from 1966, 88mm bore, with a double downdraught Solex carburettor driving twin camshafts, one for each bank.. Single valve per cylinder with external oil cooler and a radiator fitted with an opening/closing venetian blind to limit air cooling in cold weather. Very beautifully engineered but by Italian engineers who seem to overcomplicate some aspects.
This is not mine, but what it should look like when it is restored.

How about these engines - they'd really make an Air-cooled VW fly.

Making fun of engine transplants is a tradition here. In exchange for some needling, the resources here on anything VW far exceed the negatives, YMMV
One valid point though. If you think you can escape an VW engine rebuild by “ slapping a Roo in there “ that’s a poor strategy, especially in a smog state |

Hello, Kennedy! I need an adapter for an 1800cc Lancia Flavia Coupe engine from 1966 to a VW transaxle of course.

Difficulty with our beloved VW flat 4 is it's a mid- 1960s design at best. Even "advances" on the venerable dual port such as the Type 4 and Vanagon Waterboxer are obsolete. Any "development" on VW's obsolete designs is in private hands.
Subaru on the other hand initially did a heartfelt rip- off of VW's pancake. Unlike Volkswagen who turned their back on their flat 4 Subaru continued development and corporate backing of their flat 4. No "supply chain issues" with Subi motors. Had Volkswagen continued development of their flat 4 we might see something like Subaru's EJ series. How bout four valve per cylinder heads with belt driven cams? Not a big stretch for VW. Porsche had their "cammer" engine sixty years ago. Why not Volkswagen?
Porsche stuck with pancake motors. They whipped up some very nice pancakes over the years.
Seriously, "supply chain issues" are a pain in everyone's ass. It's a good thing VW made twenty million or so aircooleds and a shit ton of parts. Still, the inevitable is inevitable. No one is compelling Volkswagen to make OEM parts for their obsolete cars. Volkswagen doesn't make new engine cases, crankshafts or cylinder heads anymore. There is enough NOS around we can keep it rolling for a while.
Another issue as seen on the Thruway is an endless supply of SUVs, larger and faster vehicles all competing to occupy every millimeter of available space. In the Pro Wrestling world of modern traffic it helps to weigh 4000 pounds or more powered by 300 horsepower or more. The more, the better. I damn near get run over in traffic every time I'm on the Thruway.
I'd like to build something like a VW 1/4 mile Pro Stock drag car or a Euro style Fun Cup Bug tweaked to be a daily driver. Looks like a Bug but is well capable of substantially exceeding the speed limit for extended periods of time safely and reliably. A Subaru motor provides the technology we would have if VW hadn't turned their backs on their flat 4. A full cage provides safety for jousting with SUVs on the Thruway.
I'm not concerned about government approval. Any modern powerplant produces far less smog than our obsolete aircooleds. Or if you're a purist a tuned Volkswagen produces far less emissions than the haphazardly tuned junk we used to drive.
