picked up 1971 914 a few years ago and it needs new tires
wheels appear to be Empi-8spoke-4lug 15 or 16 inch diameter as not sure how to measure
tires on the wheels are 195/60R15 which I guess supports a 15 inch wheel

anyone have recommendatons or just go with what was on it?

Those are 15" diameter wheels. If you are running 195/60 series they are 5.5" wide.

That's an excellent size. The tread is wider than stock and with that side wall profile (60) the total tire diameter is very close to the original stock tire. Yes, stay with that size. About the largest you can put on it is a 205/60-15. While the 205 will give a good deal of tire on the pavement and good handling, it's also possible that a 205 may rub fenders or inner tub area.

So it would be nice and safe to stay with the 195/60-15.

What kind of driving do you want to do? If you are looking for an excellent handling street tire that also does VERY well on snow and water.....I have 195/60-15 on my Golf and these are some of the best tires I have had on it. I plan to run them on my VW 412. They would be excellent on a street driven 914.

This Golf has 322,000 miles on it and I have been through 9 sets of tires of this size so I have a very good idea of what a good tire is for dry pavement, water and snow. These are the second best snow and water tires I have ever had....behind my Continental extreme winter, high speed snow tires (right up there with Bridgestone Blizzak).

Let me know if you need a recommendation. I bought mine at the tire rack. Ray
