I just picked up a 71 standard, mfgr date 5/71, the other day and I'm going to install a new wiring harness because its kind of a rats nest. I should have a 10 fuse box according to the mfgr date and the research I did before it bought the bug. it even has the windshield wiper control in the dash instead of the steering column. it has a 12 fuse box with the upper level for the relays. the wiring is all stock color codes, except for the added after market stereo, but the wiring colors don't match to the 72 standard wiring diagram
I'm not really sure which diagram I should be looking at and harness I should buy

More likely that your car is wired similar to the wiring convention/diagram for the 71 Super Beetle (ref. below). Do you have a diagnostic port in the engine compartment? I think they may have added those to the later 71 standard models, and if so l, probably both standard and Super Beetles shared wiring that was basically identical from that point forward as well.
Note that I’ve got a 71 standard Beetle w/ the 10 fuse box and no diagnostic port/wiring, and it mostly follows the official 70-71 wiring diagram. But here and there the factory wiring seems to adhere closer to the 71 Super Beetle wiring diagram convention (e.g. way headlight switch is wired, etc.). |

Thank you for clearing this up
No diagnostic port in the engine bay. |
