Hey gang.
Summarily:
on my 1.9 liter petrol water boxer DH code the main engine pulley is rubbing on the water cooling pipe that runs under the pulley to the right side cylinder head.
Details: With the engine sitting in a stand while the flywheel was out getting resurfaced for a new clutch I thought it would be a good idea to do a compression check.
I used a large concrete drill attached to the main pulley bolt to turn the engine over (without the flywheel installed).
Without any spark plugs the engine turned over easily.
When I installed a spark plug into each cylinder to test the compression the drill wasn’t strong enough to turn the engine completely.
I also noticed there was at least 1 inch of crankshaft end play when I tried this.
After installing the freshly machined and original flywheel, new water pump, new main seals front & back I noticed the main pulley was now contacting the water cooling pipe that runs under said pulley to the right side cylinder head.
Crankshaft end play with the flywheel installed is minimal.
Did I inadvertently damage the crankshaft main bearings when I tried turning the engine over with the drill?
The engine was running strong, no leaks and not smoking when it was running in the van.
Does this engine now need a complete rebuild because of my boneheaded attempt?
Thanks for your guidance.
P.S.
If it does need a rebuild can anyone recommend a shop in the Seattle area that can rebuild it?
Follow up:
I found the culprit.
The new water pump is slightly different (by 2 mm) than the original one thus causing the cooling pipe to contact the pulley. |

While not a good idea, it should not have damaged the thrust bearing or the crankshaft. You should actually measure the endplay with a dial indicator and report the measurement.
The shims set the end play. Did one of the 3 get lost? Your actual measurement will tell us a lot. This will bump your post. |
