Is it worth filling the area underneath the rear luggage bay? If so what are most people using? |

I made a sock using a stocking and filled it with strips of half-inch thick carpet underlay. I used the same system inside the door panels and in the area under the quarter-windows, and also in the engine compartment in the side pockets where the tar boards used to be.
It made a big difference to the sound levels inside the cabin. |

I put some heavy acoustical foam in mine. Should have "socked" it.
It's turning to fine dust and I have to vacuum often as the subwoofer blows that stuff out its nooks and crannies.
That's a project for the deader of summer when I'm not going to be driving it. |

| Originally there was a piece of pressboard / Masonite that was nailed across that opening. |

Mine has that too. The original piece was in good condition and I put it in a safe place to reinstall at the end of the project. 10 years later I couldn't find it, so I went to the hardware store and got piece of masonite and trimmed that to fit.

Did the same thing Nicholas! Removed the strip and put it somewhere safe ( that was 3 years) I’m sure once I Install an alternative… it will show up again.
Good call on the carpet strips and ‘sock’ might give that a go)
Was the sock just an old canvas sack or something sewn together? |

It was a women's below-knee stocking (nylon in US terms) about half the width of the car's interior. Two of those fit perfectly in the space under discussion.
I suppose one could use a woollen sock or stocking, but I wanted to keep the weight down. It's also easier to put a knot in the end of the stocking once it has been filled. |
