I have 2 of these wooden dash pads, they were covered with some padding and black pleather. They both have a stamp (date I think) on the bottom, but nothing that says OEM vw. But they fit perfect. Were these fitted from the factory? Can't find any info... Going to repair them and replace the pleather.

Thanks
Glauco

The near one looks to be an original dash pad from '66 or '67. The one further back is from an earlier car, which appears to have an opening for a speaker grill in place of the perforations.

Original pads were actually made of a pressed fiberboard, not wood, so be careful when handling them. With age and water/sun damage, they can crack or break pretty easily. They were all covered in black vinyl with a thin sheet of foam backing.

I used fiberglass matting to repair my original pad before recovering it and that worked very well. Decent original pads are very hard to find now...hope you're able to bring these two back to life.

Thanks for your reply! They are actually identical, the further one is just missing most of the perforated part. I managed to fix them both wit some fiberbord to replace the missing parts and then covered all the cracks with fiberglas. Hopefully both will be useful now.
