View original topic: Safari kit windshield or pop outs

Hey guys , I am building this 65 and want to get it out this summer. I am running on a budget.
So my options are either a safari kit or a pop out kit.
which one of them its the best?
My concern with the safari kit is wind noise because there will be no air output. Has anyone tried this way?

Also getting used original pop outs or repros?

Any good brand for safari or are they are all the same?

I would say pop-outs. are you really going to drive with the safari open and get a face full of bugs...?

I agree with finster on the safari windshield, it really would not be practical for everyday driving and could be more prone to leaks than a windshield seal. As for the pop outs I would go for originals and replace the seals as they are available. Just be sure you buy the right size as the later thin pillar ones are larger. ( I could not tell from your photos which pillar size your car is) Good luck

I feel like you really need to have popouts if you're going to install & drive with a windshield safari, for the amount of wind that'll be coming through the car is you're driving with it open (which might be illegal in some areas).

Cost-wise, there are a few options out there. I'm going with Loose Nuts for their quality, and yes, it was more expensive. As for popouts, luckily the '65 and later are more affordable than the pre-'65. You can probably get a decent set for about $150 here in the classifieds....

If you have a sunroof, rear pop outs help equalize air in vs air out.
The 59 with sunroof open on the highway, not having pop outs and ac36hp engine, there is a noticeable difference on speed capability and the buffeting on your eardrums becomes annoying as he'll.
No sunroof, pop outs really help air flow thru.
My personal opinion is while safari windsheild looks cool, I've been hit by enough bugs and bees while whipping a road bike down hill that it's not something I'd drop money on.

Here are some cheap (priced) popout windows:

Pop outs...I have a safari on my 63. It's really not worth it, IMO. They tend to leak but they look cool when you're parked. You'll use pop outs more than you'll use the safari. Get the pop outs

Pop outs. There's a reason VW offered those from the factory and not a safari windshield.
