View original topic: 71 bus.. What is this canister?

Not sure what this canister is for (breather?) But As you can see, one of the hoses connects to the fan shroud, and the other one is just hanging down by the intake manifold, not connected to anything.

Sorry for my ignorance, I have a Bentley manual and I’ve looked thru it pretty thoroughly but still no answer.

Here’s the “canister” for lack of a better word

The braided hose coming out towards the rear of the bus is connected to the nipple on the fan shroud.. and the one that comes out towards the front is wrapped underneath the heater duct (out of view) and is sitting next to the cast intake manifold.

"Charcoal cannister." part of the emissions system. (fuel evaporation.) There is also a third connection on that cannister that hooks up to a vent on the fuel tank. You can't see it in this picture so look in behind by the front hose connection. The hose that is connected to nothing hooks to the stock air cleaner at the intake snout. :D

Bentley manual (green book) Section 2 fuel system, page 27.

I hope you still use the original air cleaner

You should consider replacing the charcoal in that canister once in awhile. It absorbs gas fumes and will get "full".

Fresh granulated charcoal can be sourced at an aquarium store. They use it to filter tank water.
