Hi everyone - I have the engine out of my beloved Beetle (1974 1200cc) for some routine maintenance seeing as I needed to take the Transmission out to change the seals.
This is a 2 part Q;
1) I was going to clean the carbon off the pistons and valves, and wondered the best way you would all do it and if I am ok to re use the original Valves as these are obviously the VW originals and best? Should I clean up as well as re-ground too? Would you clean the Cylinder head too? If so again, what would you use?
2) I need to change the inner seals of the Driveshafts as these were leaking - any ideas at all? I was also going to replace the end driveshaft bearings, but boy oh boy - bearing pullers seem to rare - any ideas on one that is compatible at all? I believe I need to take the end ones out first before removing the whole shaft in order to get the new washers/seals into place? Any ideas or "how t's" at all?

That's not routine maintenance.

Myself, I'd drive to nearest freeway and run my car with wide open throttle for awhile. But since your engine is out, my suggestion is to do a compression and/or leak-down test; because, you may not need to open up your engine at all. |

Do you have a swing axel trans.? the boots can be changed with trany. in car.
Marine supply stores sell a liquid carbon remover you spray down the carb. with the motor running.
Do a compression test on a warm motor with the throttle propped wide open and if your readings are good don't mess with it. |

Old school trick. Slowly pour water into the carb, slow enough the engine doesn't cut-off. Pistons and valves will get steam cleaned.
Ever see a water cooled engine with a 'blown' head gasket? The piston where the leak is will be shiny clean. 8) |
