I have a 68 Bug and I'm wondering whether to choose the smooth, basketweave, or squareweave vinyl. I'm also thinking about getting it in tan (from jbugs). Is this blasphemous? I'm mainly asking for resale purposes down the line, what has more value?

Also, since I'm likely getting the kit, what's the difference between the OEM style headliner and the Easy/conversion style one (and perforated vs crush grain).

Thinking about resale value already? Sounds like you are thinking of this bug as an investment. Flipping bugs rarely results in breaking even let alone turning a profit.

If you are buying for your own enjoyment, do what appeals to you and enjoy the ownership experience. That said, keeping a bug (or any classic-ish car) as close to stock as possible will probably be most appealing to prospective buyers. When a car has lots of mods (cosmetic/mechanical/electrical) prospective buyers are doing mental calculations to figure out how much it will cost in time and money to undo whatever has been done and make it to their taste. They are also considering how properly any of these mods have been done. With a mostly stock car you have a straightforward predictable platform to work from as you make it your own. None of the stock-ish upholstery you've mentioned strays very far from the original look.

If you can possibly afford it, have the headliner done by a professional ... especially if you haven't got much or any experience doing this type of work. Many a DIY headliner job has turned out poorly (wrinkled/wavy). Part of the problem is the quality of the stock-look headliner material being sold these days. But it does require a good deal of skill and finessing to get an excellent outcome. A poorly done headliner doesn't add any value to the car. Most prospective buyers will want to remove it and have it done right ... more time and money they'll need to factor into their calculations.

Post photos of how the car is now and others will chime in with their experiences, insights and suggestions.

Oldschool beat me to it as I was writing.

It's your car, so as you please.

However, if you want to flip the car and don't use the originally available colours and textures you then immediately turn off a proportion of buyers who will want it as original as possible.

Look here for year model 1968 for the correct colour combinations. I don't believe tan was a 68 colour.
