Going with the spec.'d torque of 72 ft. lbs. and I had to stop.
I have replica BRM's from CIP1, modified a set of thier wheel bolts. On one of the front drums (have to be aftermarket shit) i feel the threeds starting to pull. You just know the feel.
I went with 60ft.lbs. for all the wheel bolts now.
Aftermarket front drums only have about 3/8" of thread in the drum.
How in the hell is that supposed to handle 72ft. lbs.
Been thinking about studs and nuts but then what gives if you have a flat and have to resort to the stock wheel?
The 60 degree wheel nuts for the BRM's I think wont properly mate with the stock wheels.

That's why I carry a correct set of lug nuts for the spare. |

What is the angle of the stock type lug nut? |

I believe they are actually ball shaped and as such do not have a specific angle.
Quite frankly I have never been a torque wrench on wheel nuts kind of guy. Dad taught me how to think about what you are doing and trust the feel of it. When all the squish is gone and the pressure comes up hard and quick... you are done. It's really that simple.
I have been swapping wheels and tires on our cars for 60 years now without one single failure using this method. That is a better average than the tire shops I have patronized! In fact I don't let them put my wheels on anymore. I take them in loose and put them back on myself at home.
I do not know of one car manufacturer that supplies torque wrenches with the spare tire. They size the wrench handle length so that the average person changing a flat on the road can get it right 100% of the time. |

I used to torque my lug bolts to 50ft/lbs on my buggy even with big sticky slicks mounted on the wheels for autocross. I pulled the threads out of 2 new "german" wide 5 drums at 75lbs. I put 12mm Wurth-certs in all 4 drums and torqued to 50# never had an issue for many years till I went to studded disks. |
