As above. I have tried all the normal things like checking for air leaks, correct mixture and timing settings..............any thoughts??

Very common. Center mounted carbs require manifold heating.
The beetles use a tube connected to the exhaust manifold. Watercooled cars either have a ceramic pin cushion heater and/or have a connection to the water jacket. Ray |
