| I believe it was unfinished metal. Mine was rusty so I painted it smoke gray and it looks fine. |

I did not want to create a new thread for this question. Though in the other "speaker grill" threads I could not find the answer that I was looking for and this thread seems to be the most appropriate place to ask it.
Here's the question, what did the germans use behind the speaker grill? Was it Speaker grill, the wire screen, then some sort of paper or cardboard sandwitching the screen? Or what...? It seems like you would want someting behind the screen between the dash to keep it from vibrating.
Below is a pic of what I am working on. I have the chrome speaker grill, I painted my screen black (was rusty), am I supposed to have any sort of backing between it and the dash? Also am I supposed to secure the screen to the grill or it just gets sandwiched?

The factory put a couple small pieces of black foam rubber behind the screen to prevent rattling. One on each side. I have a picture of mine before I took it off.
The screen was heavily flocked and I do not think you could see the paint color behind it when new. |

| The screens had a grey/beige flocking similar to that found inside glove box liners ( of the few car that still have that original finish) |

Behind the speaker grill I have 2 OG rectangular "plastic" pieces on either side of the speaker that I presume were to stop any vibration..... also painted blue... and now removed.
I will look into flocking as currently the grille screen has surface rust from age. On my '67 Westfalia I had used a piece of black felt to cover the speaker grill, not stock, but it looked better.
