On my 2 door '86 Golf, the weather stripping across top of door is badly deteriorated and leaking water into car. Can anyone tell me what the best solution is? It looks to me like this is all one with the hard rubber strip that runs across the top corner of roof above door. Thanks. Allen

Just now noticing this.

Have not seen a 2 door in ages. But I drive my 85 4-door Golf all the time.

I've got an old Mitchell manual (crash manual for body shops) that lists parts.

The part mentioned above is the moulding/scalp (rubber) that I think is mostly there to keep wind noise down. There is another seal around the door opening, which is the one that would keep water from getting inside the car.

I just looked the part number for the door seal as well, then looked to see if it's available. Yes and not that terribly expensive either.

Earlier this year, on my 85, the front section of the seal under the top moulding was getting loose, and I finally took the time to clean it up and just glue it back in place with some Automotive Goop contact cement. I had to put a little bit of clear silocone where that front piece meets the top one. I'm surprised I didn't take any photos at the time but I did tonight.

I post this image to illustrate the difference between the moulding seal and the actual door seal, they are different pieces of rubber.

I had no idea that the door seal itself was still available until just now. My door seal got damaged long ago by the seat belt buckle. I'd been using self-adhesive weatherstripping for house doors/windows. But it never worked that great. So when I did the repair I mentioned above, I dug some garage door seal I think, that I had lying around, and cut a piece to fit and glued it down. It's much better repair than anything I had done before. Still, I wonder how good quality those seals from CIP are.
