This engine is in a 1978 Volkswagen convertible. When new it had fuel injection,
What would be the reason to use this old style fan shroud on an engine. Why wouldn’t you use the larger more modern style? What is the difference between then?

Because the PO enjoyed downgrades, why use the shroud made with every technical advancement ever developed for aircooling when you can use a 1940's design with the internal vanes omitted as a bonus? Same deal with the carb, and likely other "modifications", some "expert" or magazine said it was better. |

| May have been an availability issue... Like "hey, I have the wrong part for the application but I can make it work and I won't have to wait and/or spend more money for the correct part." That was my mentality forty years ago. |

Lubed the O rings with some oil, put the seals in dry. |
