Just given old alum. cargo rack. All metal. No wood. Mounting on 74 SB. Sand, clean, primer and alum paint to spruce up?? Cant seem to locate pads to mount rack to roof. They exist but proper terminology lacking to locate. Any help appreciated. Thnks

Use fuel hose on the legs. If too thick to properly fit the rail gullies, buy some clear, appropriately-sized flexible hose from ACE Hardware.

Remember, however, your fuel mileage will be a little less (some people have mentioned here; although, I personally say), and some racks like to whistle.

I have what I believe to be a 70's VW of America rack that makes some awful noise at speed. The easy fix is to wrap some rope or a bungee cord around the bars of the rack to break the wind up some.
