View original topic: I hate cv's

To begin with, Muir's suggestion of putting the driveshaft into a vice and
tapping the end w/ a hammer to release the hub never worked for me.

Anyway, I did manage to remove one cv on each end which allowed me to
put on new boots and disassemble the joints for cleaning/repacking. So,
I did this only to reassemble every one wrong  Guess it must
be an intuitive thing to do. Now they won't give any play and need to be
reassembled.

So here's the question: should I go ahead and buy new joints since I'm going
to have to reassemble the whole shmooze anyway? I'm asking b/c the ones
assembled right now were done in hopes of getting another 10-20k miles
while saving up cash for new ones. They have minor pitting ( < 1cm) on
each.

Likewise, cip1 sells a $50 cv made by Lobro and a $36 guy that's 'good quality.' Anyone know the justification for a higher price and if it's worth it? Ok, one last question, since I really hate messing w/ these things, I've
thought about buying the preassembled drive shaft w/ cv's packed and
ready to go. Is this going to be a valid option or am I getting shafted b/c
it's the easier route?

Thanks for the help.

Don't feel bad, the joints actually go back together the wrong way easier than the right way, you're not the first to do so!

That said, Muir is a good starting point, but even he can use a little help with some of his procedural descriptions, I like to read Muir, Bentley, then use google, and also refer to this forum. By then I usually have benn able to choose the best description to make the job go pretty smoothly. This is the info I use for cv joints : http://volksweb.relitech.com/cvjoints.htm

I think since they're out, you ought to be able to redo them all pretty quickly and get yourself going for a while again anyways. I can't say anything about the new cv options, as I've always been able to rebuild the ones I've had so far.

Good Luck,
Jeremy

Well considering the quality Lobro CV's are $54 a piece from Bus Depot and a new axle with everything ready to go is $119 I know what I'll be doing when the time comes for new CV's on my bus. For another $11 bucks not having to deal with all the mess is well worth it. You might want to call or email Ron to see what joints they use in the preassembled axle but I don't think you will be getting the shaft with going with a whole new axle. Ron normaly carries quality stuff.

The only problem with that is that I don't think they use the good Lobros in the half shaft replacement for $119.

I had to repack the ones I bought last year because they were spewing grease everywhere. Not good.

It is probably the messiest job to be done on your bus. At least you only have to do it about every 30K.

Certanly makes you enjoy those 30,000 miles more!

Is it good for the soul? I hope so.

i know what you mean! i am starting to hate cvs too... just did mine, the hard way, cleaning and regreasing them. it seems to take so long to clean them well, it might be cheaper timewise to buy new ones. then when you put them on the car, there cant be any loose dirt lurking around the bottom of the car waiting to fall into the new grease. and damn, those things are heavy as you are are threading the bolts into the flanges. if cvs were human i would send em hate mail! yeah i know, im just a whiner!

Thanks for the replies :D

Based on what's been said, I'm not alone in my hatred for the blasted things. I'm thinking
it's going to be a call to Ron at bus dept and see what he says about his preassembled ones.

Unless he says something offensive about my mother (which it doesn't sound like he will
 ), it looks like he's got the parts I need.

Once again, muchas gracias.
