View original topic: Horn honks on left turns

As states in the title, my horn on my ‘63 honks when I turn left or when I press the button. No “auto” honk when turning right. The guy I bought the car from said he drilled thru the tube when trying to install a suspension air tank in the trunk.

Clearly, the tube is grounding out when I turn left, honking the horn. But what could have been hit in the tube during this drilling accident to cause this?

Hoping for an easy fix. Haha. Thanks.

As long as nothing is mounted where it can touch the tube, an extra hole drilled in it should not matter.

By any chance, does your car have this rubber bump stop in place? It keeps the tube from rubbing on the body.

Well, don’t worry too much. I once had an Alfa that would sound the horn when the thermostat triggered the cooling fan
Not that it matters that much, but my understanding is the steering column tube is part of the power circuit, not the ground.

I had to go out and check but yes it does.

Check the rag joint just above the steering box. Could be a cotter pin touching when you turn. The rag joint isolates the steering shaft from the gearbox, so the horn button is the only ground.

That doesn’t seem to be the issue.

I had a similar issue, where the shaft penetrates the fire wall it goes through the metal sleeve/column. If not centered correctly or if bent it will touch when turning. You need to make sure it is aligned just right.
