Hi folk

Since buying my 1303S Cabriolet earlier this year my miles have remained the same - my Odometer was broken ... another job!

On Sunday I found a Youtube link about how to clean a Speedometer so I took mine out of the bug and dis-assembled it on the bench.

I quickly found that the Odometer 12 tooth Sprocket gear had split ...

More research shows this is a very common problem and I've heard of two more cracked sprockets in the last 24 hours!

A quick google on the Internet and eBay found none available in England but there was a French seller and a Polish seller offering them at STUPID prices.

I tried glue but that didn't work because of the type of plastic ... then I had an idea to put a "Collar" on the sprocket. To my delight the sprocket body was exactly 5mm in diameter when fully compressed (Gap closed).

Having a lathe I put a piece of Aluminum round bar in the chuck and drilled it out to 5mm ... then turned down the outer diameter to 6mm and cut the collar off at 2mm.

... I pressed the collar over the Sprocket gear ...

... then pressed the repaired sprocket back on the Odometer shaft which was rather hard but using a form of clamp it went on and Bingo! my Odometer is now working!

Now I appreciate many of you won't have lathes but you can very easily buy tubing (Aluminum or brass) which is 6mm OD (Outside diameter) and 5mm ID (Inside diameter) and just cut a 2mm collar that you can press back on the shaft.

Hope my findings help someone ... even happy to make you a collar as long as you pay the shipping ..

Now just start cranking those out by the dozen and sell them for $20/each! I'll be your first customer!
