Have a couple of questions about split glove box trim. I took mine off to start cleaning them up and noticed they were different. One is like the ones I usually see with alluminum tabs. The other is much heavier in weight, different stamping on the back side and has staple like tabs that are crempt into a channel. So what is the deal? Did VW have two different makers for there trim? Or was there a different stamping for the earlier years? Let me know if any of you have any information.
Thanks
Josh

Josh, I have the ones with the tabs on them. Its hard to tell but does it look like the one on the bottom has been fixed due to the tabs being snapped off before? |

I have another type too.
Josh I have an extra with the aluminum tabs, but most of the tabs are busted, if you want it let me know, you pay shipping and it's yours. |

Skim,
Did you have the pod and glovebox trim chromed, or just polished?

Its all chromed. I have a guy who chromes aluminum sweet. He did my solid hood emblem, hood handle, pod frames, glovebox frames and the wolfsburg crest backing plate. He also did my 3 fold rag rails. |

Josh,
SuperSkim is right, your bottom picture shows a heavier version that has been repaired with a wire bent like a staple. I have some like yours ,the tabs are different and the trim is crimped on the back side. it's slightly different dimensionally, but fits. My pod trim is made the same.

After chroming they'll Really be brittle!! Careful!
I might be interested later in having some small pieces done, if you would be interested in playing middleman. It's difficult to find a quality chromer in my area who will do this type of work. I got raped on the chrome for my racecar, and the quality SUCKED!

Thanks for the replys. Sorry my amature skills did not let the pictures load onto this forum. Anyway before I took them out of the car I noticed the staples and thought the tabs broke off and someone had rigged the one. But after taking it out and inspecting it I noticed it was much different. I looked around the whole thing for signs of the "normal aluminum tabs" and couldn't find them. Also this one is much heavier in weight and gauge than the other. The back side has a rolled edge right up to the channel where the tabs are crempt in. I have always seen the ones with the normal aluminum tabs on it but I have not seen one like this. Makes me wonder if it was made to support the hinges of a glove box door. Just wondering if anyone had any info on it. The other picture in the gallery show the closeup better. |

Joshua, I have one of those heavy duty ones too. To my eye the steel wire crimped into the groove looked original. |

The trims with the aluminum tabs-the lighter in weight trims are the only trims that will work with glove box doors. The heavier trims with the steel wire clips will not accept a glove box door. I had numerious trims with the aluminum tabs and that were left and right specific-at the tops of each one was stamped a "L" or a "R" |

There must be two (or possibly more) different heavier trims, as mine don't have wires, but inserted aluminum tabs. I have three light weight trims that are marked, as you say, L and R ( never noticed that before!) Thanks,
