I'm confused about where the rubber strap goes on the back seat. I've looked thru the gallery and there seems to be several different places and methods for mounting the strap. I can't spot a pattern based on year.

On some cars the strap is on the parcel shelf and there is a post on the back of the seat-- the strap keeps the seat up.

On some cars the strap is on the back of the seat and there is a hook on the rear shelf.

On some cars the strap is on the back of the seat and there is a screw post on the rear shelf. On these cars there may or may not be another hook on the vertical below the seat (strap holds it both up AND down)

What's correct? When did they change? What's correct, post screw thingy or hook?

The strap goes on the seat back.

Here is my theory to support this (hence, not fact);
- in up right position it will stay up by attaching it to the hook on p-shelf
- in downward position it will stay in place by attaching it to hook below seat bottom

That's what I always thought too, but Friday night I was at Emerson Biggins house and he has an original 64 (?) and that backseat has the screw post on the back of the seat. The strap is fastened to the shelf. And I know this car is original. I also checked for extra holes and signs of tampering and I'm willing to bet it is the way it left the factory.

AND, here's a car West Coast Classics did, and I assume Lenny and the Crew know what is correct:

The strap/clip is an evil plot dreamt up by angry Krauts because Germany failed to hold at the Russian Front :lol:

I just took mine off a few weeks ago before recovering seats. My interior WAS original so, I'm pretty sure it was right.

My strap was broken in half. However, the strap IS anchored on the seat backrest. The there's a hook un the car for both positions, up and down.
I'm not sure about "up" since three is not one on the shelf but I can see the place for it. So, second image should be right.

Maybe there is a differance between coupe and convertibles. The vert you looked at was a 63. I looked up the VIN on the floorpan of the extra parts I have and they are from a 65 coupe.

The breakdown in the KGPR catalog of the strap/hook and clasp/catch combos and year breaks are accurate. The strap should be screwed to the backrest, and the hook screws to the parcel shelf. Intuitively, that's always seemed backwards to me, but oh well. Feel free to be creative though, it's your car :)

I'll take your word for it, but I do think it odd that some of the best restorations in the country can't even agree on this simple thing.
