Just to be clear, RM Uno HD is a BASF brand line of paint and not Glasurit.

I thought it was a glasurit line but it's not, it's BASF. So it's interesting that the code L29 was available in the BASF Uno Single Stage line.

Great work! Your tank and other items look fantastic. Much more interesting than black too.

BASF owns Glasurit

Thanks Ryan! Didn't know that.

Buy RM UNO paint for your tank online! Problem solved.

1) Qt of L29
2) Qt of DH 44 Hardener
3) Qt of UR 50 Reducer

Squirt and Done!

OLDv, do you think a Quart will be sufficient to paint a tank? Couple of coats?

I painted the tank, wiring cover, trunk mat, 2 glove boxes, the heater muffler covers, arm rest support, and turn signal support all with 1 pint. Some left over. 2 coats on everything but 3 on the tank.

OK, wow. Maybe I'll get a gallon and start a tank restoration sideline...

:D

I think I lucked out with this. So, there is a powder coating outfit in my area. I wanted to try powder coating a tank I had, to see what the finish would look like, how durable it would be etc.

All I had was a '56 tank that I got here on The Samba a while ago. It's not "correct" for my car, having the 2 horizontal ribs rather than the 4 vertical ribs. So I decided I would have it powder coated.

I chose a color off the RAL Color Chart: http://www.ralcolor.com/

I think I chose this color but would need to call the PC to verify:

RAL 5014 096-111-140 #606E8C Pigeon blue

I wasn't expecting much and since it's kind of my "backup" tank, I really wasn't concerned that it would be color correct. Check it out, not that bad eh? Way too glossy but who cares, it's the gas tank!

Taubenblau is the name of the VW color Dove Blue

Does it look Dove Blue in person?
Example:

It's not close to Dove Blue, that piece of Bus is much more blue.

This is what it looks like in the car, with the coffee cup and extension cord there for reference.
But I'm fine with the color. Although the guy messed up the collar of the fuel fill neck and didn't paint it all the way up to the lip..
When I fix my '57 4 rib tank, I think I am going to go with satin black because I think it looks better than even the proper original grey/blue VW color would look.

I never came back with an installed picture. I had my local paint shop mix up the L 29 code, and while I am ok with the color, it doesn't/didn't match the old tank.

This is an old thread but I wanted to give it a bump for anyone looking for L29 Blue Gray.

When I looked for a quart of Glasurit paint for my tank it was going to be $580 (without shipping) for the paint, catalyst, and reducer.

TCP Global (http://www.tcpglobal.com) had an exact paint match from a part and it was around $85 (plus shipping).

Thanks for the 'bump'! I need to get my tanks repainted. You can see the bad job of picking the paint color myself if you look at the tanks in my gallery. I'd put a photo here but for the life of me can't figure the process out. I'm kinda stupid when it comes to some things.

Their computer printed label said 8:1 but the label on the can said 4:1. I called them to verify.

TCP said 4 parts paint, one part hardener. Reducer is not recommended because it has a little already because it isn't full gloss. He also said "do not spray real wet, medium is fine".

I am trying to keep my car as close to how it came from the factory as possible. It won't be perfect but getting those details right takes time and to me is worth the effort.
