Wow, those look like some really low water levels! Looks like you guys had a good time, though!

Hi Eeej, good to hear from you. Yeah, the trip rocked, but in addition to Joe Cool, sitting in for OVP Damon and representing Deaf Volks, the hardened mechanic and driver of "The Beauty" for 2014, Kyron was in full effect riding shotgun with Joe.

We rocked the M5 from RP and drove OVER THE TOP of Goat Mountain via 17N02/16N18! Never been done. Then down to the M10 for the western traverse all the way to the M1 at Penny Pines, then M1 to Pillsbury and over the top of 7,800 Hull Mt! YES! If you guys take a shot at it and make it, there's a ROAD CLOSED sign at the M61 intersection 5 miles past the summit and we opted to blow through it. 10 miles further toward Covelo, there was a gate that I anticipated to be closed and it was. It was unlocked and I opened it and then closed it behind us. We made it through!

As seen in Joe Cool's pictures, we can recommend a new 1st day camping option directly below the huge green bridge 15 miles past Covelo at the bottom of the dirt switchbacks. Access to the drivable river bottom is via a small dirt road on the Covelo side of the river. First four buses get the regal concrete slab on which we camped. Room for 40 buses NO problem. Slightly moto exit from the river bottom, but we managed with no problems.

The last never driven road was from Mad River on 36, over South Fork Mountain Road designated "1" all the way up to 299 taking the East option at the end to drop us 5 miles East of Willow Creek in Salyer. This map doesn't show it, but there's a "Y" off "1" that takes you to a point 5 miles West of Willow Creek too, exiting at Barry Summit on 299. We drove this road "1" -which parallels Kneeland Road for about two hours and didn't see one car until a mile from the other side. Amazing road, paved most of the way, lots of tree slash and limbs, very, very remote with zero houses in the 45-50 miles and all at 3000-5000 feet.

We covert camped again off the side of the Trinity River off 299 and that was a superior camp site. Talked about it and didn't really feel the need to drive all the way to Shasta, so no images of the brown mountain.

Hope maybe this year drivers can rock these roads too, but if you do, make sure to have the oil bath air cleaner full and serviced!

Hello, a greeting one holy, VW, splitty, owners, Now thine, is a bay owner, but has thine, a splitty working to sharpin ones sword, tho as to it is weak and resting in a unmovable grave.. But! Thine bay! thine bay! would like to experience thine trip to build thine splitty into one great knight for the next sunrise.

If thine bay shows up it will experience some medieval torture at the RS, least of all the sharp tongue of Sir Verrilli shall pierce your virgin ears. You, squire, would be wise to move the unmovable splitty towards Shasta with us or thumb a ride in a proper split window steed.

Greetings Newts, would-be Newts (larvae), lurkers and cheerleaders. And Blackcatface. Welcome.
First, some old business.
1. If you have not added yourself to the list, please do so with all speed.
2. Newcomers or those out of practice may find useful the lists found on page 376 of this thread, detailing the parts, skills, and equipment required to undertake this trip. Also read Brian's introduction to the trip on page 1, describing the myriad and exciting ways in which you may die upon it.
3. The route is currently under consideration, suggestions and requests are always welcome. As always, the final route will be determined at the starting line, and is subject to constant, in-flight modification.
4. No, Jesse. Just no.
5. The location of the gathering spot, or Rampaging Spot, as it is known, is a closely held secret and will not be published in any open forum. If you plan to participate in the trip, please PM me for the location. Be prepared to present credentials, including a photo of you putting chains on the bus you will be bringing.
6. The Shasta Snow Trip is open to all 1950 to 1967 split window busses, and absolutely no other vehicles of any type, kind, or vintage, regardless of who you know or how much you pay us.

Two weeks, one day, 14 hours. Get crackin.

Thine Bay rampaging spot tis on the corner of Polk and California in the fair city of Saint Francis. Plenty of sword sharpinin to be had there for you and your brethren, young Sir.

Backroadbus Tue Jan 14, 2014 2:51 pm

Prithee, Good Sir, do desist from thy witticism steadfast couched in seeming affection, for it is with great mirth I am quaking, to extent that my sides doth come close to splitting asunder! In parlance more befitting of this moderne gathering, I express my outburst of mirth without withholding such for politeness' sake!

I pray ye, accept my apology for such utterances expressed vainly and without care for comprehensibility. I inquired of a convent of translator nuns to determine what I said in response to your recommendation ealrier posted, and I believe, without contrivance, that it is, in essence, expressed best as: "Funny as hell - LOL!"

Wish I could go, but my neck is just not yet healed enough. Maybe next year...

If anybody needs a gnarly rear bumper, let me know. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1585132

Or if anybody wants to trade my 14"s with Grabbers for some 15" Bus wheels, also please let me know! For that matter, if you're looking for an entire early bay beam to skyjack the front of your bus, I'm looking for a stock beam to sit my bus back down to stock.

rustybus Tue Jan 14, 2014 6:21 pm

Great photos Gene, and really glad to hear you will make it down again. Please pack some of that snow to bring us. I don't want another dust trip.

Rustybus is waking from hibernation and today I got my welder back from my friend, and got a new gas regulator, so hopefully I can weld the left side of the bus back to the rest of the bus. Finally found a proper second battery cut off switch too. I need to find a beat to hell church key apron since Dawn snagged the one off the Rustybus so her fancy new 1776 and its fancy new exhasut would fit. Now I'm down one beat on the inside apron.

Today or tomorrow I'm starting the tune-up procedures and will be driving the bus so I can remember all the stuff I need to fix. With luck me and my little red headed co-pilot will be heading to Havasu in it for a shakedown run. Sounds like the insulation I thought about putting behind the door panels isn't going to be needed, and I can unpack my long sleave shirts. Can't wait to head out there.

eejermon Tue Jan 14, 2014 6:44 pm

Richard, there's 15 days until the trip....aren't you starting to fix the Rustybus about 2 weeks early?

Has anyone from the midwest ever made the SST? I'd eventually love to road trip out there in my '64 once it's done. Will be a few years at least though. I was just wondering because it seems that the trip out there in winter would be another adventure altogether. :)

You guys rock!

seizure66 Wed Jan 15, 2014 7:40 am

come south to OK and over we can caravan to the start from AZ!

So far, Teams from Ohio and Missouri have done the trip, there may be more.

Don't paint it, don't lower it. Do Shasta first!
