5. The location of the gathering spot, or Rampaging Spot, as it is known, is a closely held secret and will not be published in any open forum. If you plan to participate in the trip, please PM me for the location. Be prepared to present credentials, including a photo of you putting chains on the bus you will be bringing.
That being said We are down to one week guys! Cant wait to see you all
What's the route and timing of the SST this year?

Yes, yes Miss Clara, the departure is 04:20 on THURSDAY!!!!January 30. The route will be similar to the one we took that one year, except that we will camp down the hill from the 76, if we make it that far, or under the bridge to nowhere.
Care to join us? We'd love to have you!

Aloha newts. Had a rugged day prepping Bosco for the trip. The right rear drum has refused to come off so far in the 10 years I've owned him, but it never leaked and the brakes worked, so eff it. Well, they're starting to leak and drag and it's time. 3 bolt puller. Nope. Run around town with axle nut loose for a week. Nope. Torch. Nope. We had the 5 bolt drum puller at excruciating tension, 3/4 drive impact gun, and the hub of the drum cherry red with the torch. Nope. Not letting go. There was so much tension on the stub axle, it crushed the cotterpin holes halfway shut. I should have cut the drum off before I ruined the stub axle, but now they are both going to have to die. At least it's smallnut, so I don't have to pull the box off the springplate, but you can bet your ass I'm gonna rebuild that box when I finally get in there. And new German everything.
On the bright side, put a newer windshield in my side, repacked the fronts and checked the shoes and cylinders, grease and link pin adjust, new speedo cable, new fuel hose (all) and adjusted valves. New speakers for the stereo too. Got the correct tires on the right wheels in the right places. Now we just gotta get that mother-loving drum offa there.
Sheesh.

Regarding the drum, a lot of us have been there, but I've been lucky enough to have not destroyed my stubs in the process. Some of those battles have been so epic, I'm not sure if there is a thread hear dedicated specifically to the Drum Pull Battle Thread, if not. There needs to be one. Searched and found this thread with some good images. Love Clara's Gnarly puller, and also the crazy dude with the hydraulic jack puller. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=483309&highlight=stuck+drum
Always good hearing from you Idaho people. The state pretty hits em' out of the park for great VW people. Looking forward to the updates as Team Idaho packs the gear and embarks on their journey. |

My upstairs half of an old Victorian has all rooms to capacity but an open living room couch bed and floor if you want it. Parking is reasonably safe for a locked up bus, my neighbors can assist with blocking for anti theft purposes. I'm in downtown Sacramento. Worst case scenario you can sleep comfortably in your bus out front and take your last pre-SST shower in the morning! |

Stuck rear drum:
People will hear your stuck drum saga, and their first response will be some sort of derogatory talking of shit such as, "Your tools are inadequate." Or, "You didn't heat it up enough." Or, You're not mechanically inclined enough to pull it off." Or, "You need the VW specific tool to pull it off."
These types of statements show ignorance of the situation, and simply tell me that the author has never experienced a really stuck drum.

AWESOME... Thanks for opening your doors to us.. If all goes well we should be rolling into sacto sometime Tuesday late afternoon... What's the best way to contact you?
Also in the market for a full length rack and if memory serves me right someone up there is making pretty badass ones... How might I be able to go about acquiring one? |
