Hard to say for sure......I've never placed a dollar figure on a model I build for myself. When I did replica work for customers, the price was dependent on how much I had to spend in kits & how much work it took to make it correct; no two carry the same value. The most I've ever charged for a single replica was about $125....at present, I've got just under $300 invested in kits alone on these two Buses :o . I really, REALLY need to make these work.

Sourcing parts on even a model project can send costs through the roof. Here's a couple of examples: The Hasegawa kits come with "open" 66-ish Beetle-style wheels; I picked up two Gunze-Sangyo ovals just for the wheels/hubcaps/tires, and laid out $40. Two of the AMT 'Hogans Heros' Jeeps donated their three-spoke steering wheels; luckily those two only cost me $20. The ovals can still be used at some point, but the Jeeps are useless to me; I'll probably trade those away for something more useful someday.

Those look SWEET! I can't wait to see the finished products. Keep us posted. 8)

Wow, that is incredible. Keep posting your progress

This thread has got me renergized to do a Binz using some Hasagawa kits. It is going to be stock bodied but dropped to the max, safaried, with a tilt and running these Berms-

These are resin cast from-
www.lowkeeriderz.com
Don't know if this is still a good URL.

Here's what you need!
Its a 3D "printer" which directly produces solid plastic models from CAD drawings.

Here's an example:

URL is good, but those wheels are not on the site. I'm pretty sure I've seen them before; they were mastered by a guy in Michigan named Dennis Chung, and I have a set I bought from him in white metal(and a set I popped out in resin as a backup....those molds were a bitch to make).
Doing a Binz would be cool indeed; I'd like to see that. I considered doing one after the Barndoors are done, but I may lay low on heavy body mods for a while...these two are doing a number on me.

Man those things are awesome! The technical education lab has one here - they run about $30k for the cheap ones...I actually got to watch them "print" an object once. They can print a chain, and the links are actually separate and will move...fantastic if you can get access to one...

wonder what it would run to model the "perfect" wife... :-s , or would those computations crash the system

Plasticman-I remember some were for sale on ebay quite a while ago. I didn't buy them and never saw them on there again. Do you know if he is still making them in metal?

plasticman1432 Wed Dec 08, 2004 2:17 pm

When I got my set from Dennis, I think he said they were just about the last ones he had.....and that was almost 2 years ago. You might be able to search Ebay for him; I'm pretty sure his ID is 'thinksmallmodels.'

dude, I gotta hand it to you. I've got a die-cast VW Champer from Maisto, its all white with a weird version of a poptop & a hitch off the back big enough to haul an 18-wheeler. When I bought my '66 I took a red sharpie & colored it below the beltline & now I say to myself "Gee, looks just like my real one."

You've got dedication man.

Here's a shot of the progress on the Binz. Need to patch the roof and then it is about ready for paint.

Is that based on a single cab kit, or did you cut down a bus kit?
(Oh no - now I'm like every other yahoo that sees my truck and asks if yI did it myself!)

wonder how plasticman's creation is coming along

Here's an example:

My dad used to be one of the engineers who built thous machines. They are super cool. We have a few of the "sculptures" they make. My favorite is our 1 foot tall bust of batoven, or mebe the 4" tree with thousands of twigs and branches! :)

Tell me that batoven is a kind of cooking device I've never heard of, and you didn't actually mean Beethoven :D

DaveM Wed Feb 02, 2005 2:53 pm

a batoven is what Robin uses in the batcave

chopped50ford Wed Feb 02, 2005 5:55 pm

How IS that project comming along, "enquiring minds want to know!!" ... and see :D :D

cru62 emailed me this pic the other night, and I insisted he share it with the class; that Binz is the biz!! Hey, cru - any color in mind for the paint? I found a near match for dove blue from Tamiya, and I'm pretty sure it's the one for my Barndoor panel. 8)

As far as progress on my Barndoors go, I'm sort of in 'park' for the moment. The Heb was supposed to be here this week, and I was planning on making a mold of the dash........ no sign of it yet, unfortunately. I have 'rough-cut' the engine lid for the panel from my donor '67 body, but I need to engineer the hinge for it before any further shaping.
