I have a 61 ghia vert that I was going to restore. It has been sitting for a couple of years behind other projects. My son wants to build a baja and I'm wondering if the ghia would work. Neither of us have built a baja before. |

If it's a '61, I'd choose another vehicle to Baja....check the classifieds for a pre-Baja'd Bug; there are plenty. |

Don't cut up a bitchin car like that! Trade it for a good running baja or sell it to buy a project baja for cheap and use the rest of the money for parts. A convert ghia has got to be worth a few bucks. There are a lot of unfinished bajas or low price projects out there. Besides there are no bolt on baja ghia parts :( ........just my .02 |

Before you cut up a Ghia convertable, I'd find out how much it's worth complete. You might be dollars ahead by selling the ghia and starting with a cheaper bug.
But hey, it's your car so If you want to hack it up.....GO FOR IT. |

The car isn't in good shape and isn't worth much dollar-wise. I started tearing it down a couple of years ago and then switched to a bus restoration instead. It looked like a PO had made liberal use of bondo on the car. The pans & frame are ok but the heat channels & rockers are shot. My 14 year old is juiced on building a baja & I thought what the heck we'll just weld the doors shut & go from there. It's noted that there isn't much in the way of bolt-ons for a ghia. Has anyone built one? |

dont baja the ghia! do like i did- get one of each! my 65 baja is off-road only and my 73 ghia is street only 8) ... but i have seen some baja'd ghias. a full roll cage would really be necessary with a vert body though.... |

If I decide to go the bug route instead of the ghia are there years of bugs that are better for a baja. Are there years to stay away from? |

thats an easy search and the best answer depends on how you will use it.
*for just trail running, etc, 69 and up is the way to go. non super beetle
*for extreme balls to the wall off-roading, stay away from 66-68. you will need to convert an earlier car to IRS rear or a later car to link pin front |
