Hey out there:

I plan to buy new tires for my stock steel (15 inch) 912 wheels. The car is driven mostly on surface streets, often on windy roads and sometimes on the freeway. The car rarely sees 80mph. I am looking for a tire that will handle just about any curve of the road comfortably, but also not handicap the gas mileage. Any suggestions as to the size of the tire I should be looking for?

If you 912 is equiped with 5.5x15 standard wheel, the tire is 165 HR 15, but in the optional fuchs, the tire is 185-70-15, it's the original information for porsche 912, today the MICHELIN is excellent but expensive....i have a set of 5.5x15 fuchs in my car, i'm choose a 185 or 195-60-15 michelin.....

Dave Hillman has an excellent tire reference:

My 912 is a '68 so I started with 5.5" steelies and went with Falken Ziex ZE-512 195/60's and they fit great. I am running stock height though. If you are lowered consider going with the 185's up front so you don't rub the shock on hard corners. Plenty of room out back.
